Onward To Antarctica: The Trip Of A Lifetime

    By RomanticHeart | August 9, 2010

This ninety-one year-old citizen has enjoyed the ability to travel far and wide.  She recently visited Antarctica. She didn’t rely on second-hand images from television or magazines, but rather, she went there herself. It was the first time she’d set eyes on Antarctica, though she’d been in the same region twice previously. The plane may not have touched the ground, but they did fly over the land. As a person looking for antarctic cruise you should visit that site.

She traveled over Antarctica for four hours time and saw fjords, glaciers and mountain peaks. At one point they even descended to 300 feet above the ground. They even saw a fog-covered mountain. Clear skies and sunny weather gave them perfect viewing opportunities. The air temperatures were well below freezing.  It was early March, which marks the end of the Antarctic summer. A scientist who was conducting Antarctic research served as tour guide and lecturer on the flight.

Because she’s a birder, our traveler really wanted to see penguins. Disappointingly, she was unable to see any.  Her daughter, who was sitting at another window did spot a colony in the far distance. Near the coast of Argentina lies the Falkland Islands.  They traveled via cruise ship to this point. She boarded yet another boat to get to the East Falkland Island.  Hundreds of Magellan penguins live on one beach there. Of all the penguin species on earth, Magellans stand the tallest.

The two traveled for 16 hours by air from the US to South America, where the cruise left dock. They were able to see many South American ports, and then were invited to take a dip in the ship’s pool. Ignoring the air temperatures of 35 degrees, the ninety-one year old took to the water.  She got a certificate for having done so. When the cruise ship got to Chile, passengers traveled via bus to tour Santiago before they flew to Rio. Ideal weather held for the entire three week cruise. The clearness of the night air allowed all the passengers to see the Southern Cross, the smallest of all constellations.

One big city and a major river were all this ninety-one year-old tourist had seen during her previous visit to South America. Branching out from that major river, she’d witnessed the rain forest destruction and loss of bird habitat. Going on Safari during a trip to Africa is another of her experiences. Antarctica was the last continent she needed to visit because she’d already been to. She did that with her four hour flight above Antarctica.
