Ferry cross the Solent
By RomanticHeart | December 16, 2009
As far as I know there hasn’t been a song written about a ferry crossing the Solent, as perhaps it doesn’t have the same ring about it as ‘the Mersey’. It does, however, have close links to popular music and is only a short crossing to an Island offering great entertainment.
I am, of course, referring to the festivals that are hosted on the Isle of Wight, notably Bestival and the official Isle of Wight festival. The festival on the Isle of Wight is the ‘big daddy’ of the pair, as it has been going for much longer since the days of the late sixties and ‘flower power’. The past performers list is vast, and includes some to the most famous artists to have ever played popular music. The festival now has a reputation for encouraging new young bands, giving them the oppotunity to play in front of crowds exceeding 50,000 revellers.
The newest of the festivals is Bestival, which has only had a regular spot for less than ten years. It has a reputation for more of a carnival atmosphere, and has a large section devoted to sounds created by top radio djs. Bestival organisers dream up a new theme each year for the fancy dress, allowing revellers to dream up there own inspiration. Ultimately, the best costume chosen is likely to result in a life-time entrance to the show at no cost to the winner. Quite a good return on a little bit of extra time spent developing an idea with sticky glue and old clothing!
If you are intending travelling to one of the festivals next year, then you will have to make the trip via one of the available ferry to Isle of Wight in operation. Two ferry terminals are available for passengers to and from the island: one for foot passengers, and the other for those travelling with a vehicle.
